[dropcap style=”square”]A[/dropcap]s evenings draw in and gardens slip into shadow, many of us retreat indoors. Yet with the right lighting, an outdoor space can remain full of atmosphere long after dusk. Far from being a gimmick, thoughtful lighting adds another layer of experience, transforming the garden into a sanctuary for evening relaxation, al fresco suppers, or to enjoy from the warmth of the house. Lighting technology has advanced rapidly. Solar options, once faint glimmers that barely lasted an evening, now provide genuine illumination thanks to improvements in panels, batteries, and LEDs. Low-voltage mains systems have become safe, efficient, and inexpensive to run, offering steady light with far less environmental impact than the old, energy-hungry halogen fittings of the past.
