When Two Became One

A much needed extension joining an old cottage and barn has created a spacious family friendly home, with traditional features, high street buys and salvaged finds giving it charm and character.

[dropcap style=”square”]H[/dropcap]aving rented this cottage in Co. Kildare for two years, interior designer Aisling Kirwan and her partner David, along with their children, step-daughter, Marianne, eight, Harry, six, Danny, three and Sam two, had grown very attached to it. Given the opportunity to buy the cottage along with an adjoining barn they had no hesitation as to what their decision would be. ‘The cottage at the time consisted of three bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and home office. There was a very dilapidated extension to the rear that was not in good condition so we tended not to use it. The cottage was really small and damp but we fell in love with the history and the charm of the old buildings and decided within a few days of living here, that if the opportunity arose we would like to buy the property,’ laughs Aisling.
