The Aran Islands
[dropcap style=”square”]T[/dropcap]he Aran Islands are a group of three islands on the west coast of Ireland in the middle of the Wild Atlantic Way. The islands are at the mouth of Galway Bay, in County Galway but are also accessible from Doolin which is beside the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare. The Three Islands are: Inis Mor (Inishmore), Inis Meain (Inishmaan), and Inis Oirr (Inisheer) and here you will find the traditional Irish way of life.
Things to see and do:
The largest of the Aran islands is Inishmore with about 1,100 inhabitants. The island is characterised by numerous important Celtic Monuments and churches, miles of stone walls, abundant wildlife and eight kilometres of cliffs. The cliffs of Inishmore stretch along the entire western side of the island and form a spectacular sight. Most people who visit hire bikes and cycle around the island exploring the various sights. The main village on the island is Kilronan. It is a lively little village, which is set on Kilronan harbour with its beautiful pier which lays berth to numerous yachts and fishing boats. Here you will also find Currach’s which are traditional boats as well as Galway Hooker’s which are also uniquely Irish boats. The village also is host to a the Aran Sweater Market and has a small supermarket and a couple of traditional bars.
