Polytunnel Planting

[dropcap style=”square”]T[/dropcap]he weather we have experienced in Ireland during the last few months has slowed down growth in the garden.

Spring has been delayed this year and plants which should be bursting into growth during March have been hampered. We have had a long enough winter and we gardeners are feeling even longer withdrawal symptoms than usual.

The answer to the addition of gardening is invest in a poly tunnel. Polytunnels are the poorer, less refined cousins of the greenhouse. They usually consist of a steel arch frame covered with clear plastic. They may not look the prettiest, but they are very useful in extending the growing season.

There is little point in trying to grow a lot of our favourite vegetables and flowers while the risk of frost and snow is still likely. They would simply curl up their toes and die.
