[dropcap style=”square”]A[/dropcap]s the momentum continues to build for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, we visit this Brazilian city to take a look at the best things to see and do, places to eat and drink and where to stay – just incase the 24/7 coverage gives you itchy feet!
Things to see and do
Ipanema Beach is a must visit. Along this long stretch of sun drenched sand are postos (posts) which mark subcultures. Posto 9 is where Rio’s most lithe and tanned bodies migrate. Posto 8 is the domain of favela kids, whereas posto 10 is the spot for sports lovers where you can join in with a game of volleyball, soccer or frescobol (beach tennis played with wooden rackets and a rubber ball). The name Ipanema is an indigenous word for ‘bad, dangerous waters’, so be careful of the strong undertow and oversized waves – take a tip from the locals and only swim where they swim!
