Re-wilding your garden
[dropcap style=”square”]T[/dropcap]he current housing crisis in Ireland will mean increased building demand on green spaces and wilderness within cities.
It is now even more crucial that we preserve the diminishing ecological areas and re-wild our cities against the incoming tide of concrete infill. We need to be cognisant of the extremely important role that our gardens play in saving the planet by welcoming nature in whatever way we can.
In an article in the Irish Times, Dublin City Council Chief Executive, Owen Keegan, stated that, ‘Some of Dublin’s green spaces should be considered for the development of housing in the public interest’. While there is no denying that we need to be building more housing, does this really have to mean we lose vital natural environmental spaces? Is there a way of building new homes while sharing our spaces with nature rather than fighting against it?
The Garden and Landscape Designers Association’s (GLDA) upcoming seminar on Saturday 23rd February 2019 in the Crowne Plaza hotel in Santry, Dublin, discusses this very topic. The theme is ‘Gardening on the Edge, re-wilding Green Spaces’ and it draws on the expertise of leading authorities in this area throughout the world.
