A Thoughtful Home
[dropcap style=”square”]B[/dropcap]rought up in Southill House in Cranmore, Somerset, an early eighteenth-century manor house, Claudia was used to Georgian proportions; generous spaces and high ceilings. However, a former stable block in Co. Carlow caught her eye and this is now where she calls home.
It’s not a large home, but the ceiling in the open-plan area is high, so it feels very spacious, and as there are just the two of us, myself and my husband John, we never felt we needed more floor area’, says Claudia. ‘I like simplicity and dislike clutter, which suits an open-plan space, and although the work of William Morris post-dates the Georgian period architecture that I grew up with and love, I do subscribe to his ideas on simplicity and found his aphorism on home decoration (have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful) inspirational enough to regard as a touchstone.’
